There was a question on Linkedin where someone was asking how to do weightings across the measures of a balanced scorecard.
My reaction: Never ever try – it is a waste of time.
It is a pointless exercise that turns a meaningful report into an meaningless mathematical average from which you can deduce precisely nothing.
You end up knowing that the company is performing at 72.3% but have no idea what changed, what to change and what will changing.
Don’t bother. You will also tie yourself up in a pointless exercise arguing about what weightings to apply. meanwhile the business continues on its merry way unmanaged while an academic argument continues.
It is a far better approach to assume people are intelligent and give them the facts to so they can make decisions based upon them.
Sorry, but its a simple truth.
But there is more (Watch this space)
